Good Good, Bad Break: The Callaway Collapse | Business Culture Podcast
One ad. Six days. Hundreds of millions in enterprise value gone.
In August 2026, a sixty-second commercial from YouTube golf giant Good Good — meant as a comedic parody — depicted co-founder Garrett Clark shoving pro golfer Alexis Miestowski to the ground over a new Callaway driver. What followed wasn't a bad news cycle. It was total structural collapse: a PGA Tour title sponsorship dropped, a Golf Channel series cancelled, national retail shelf space pulled, and a multi-year manufacturing partnership terminated — all within a week.
In this episode of the Business Culture Podcast, we run a full forensic autopsy on the breakdown: how a deeply integrated, omnichannel partnership turned a single creative misstep into a chain reaction across four industries, why Callaway's own "approved" ad reveals a governance failure hiding behind compliance, and why secondary stakeholders — not the primary partners — are always first to pull the plug.
We also pull in a contrasting case: Pepsi's 2017 Kendall Jenner ad crisis, a viral misstep that looked nearly identical on the surface but stayed contained. The difference wasn't the severity of the mistake — it was how many other companies had quietly been made dependent on it not failing.
Finally, we lay out the four-phase Restorative Crisis Framework RCA Group believes could have saved the Good Good–Callaway partnership without compromising anyone's values — and what it means for any executive building a high-growth alliance with a creator brand.
In this episode:
- The creator-economy blueprint that made Good Good x Callaway the model partnership of 2023–2026
- The 60-second ad and the six-day domino effect that followed
- Four lessons in modern corporate governance
- The Pepsi Precedent: why Good Good's crisis spread and Pepsi's didn't
- RCA Group's Restorative Crisis Framework — the alternative playbook

This Business Culture Podcast episode, titled "Decoding Adrian Gore’s 4 Principles of Exponential Impact," breaks down the key strategies from Adrian Gore’s book, The Four Principles. Join host [cite: Host Name] as they explore Gore's concept of how some individuals can achieve dramatically greater impact than others, despite having similar resources.
The episode examines the human brain's evolutionary biases toward linear thinking and risk aversion, and how Gore's principles can counteract these innate tendencies. The four core principles discussed are:
-
The Pareto Tail: Focusing on high-impact, non-linear activities that drive disproportionate results.
-
Disciplined Optimism: Embracing a positive outlook as a strategic advantage while maintaining realistic judgment.
-
Declared Goals: The power of setting clear, ambitious, and widely shared objectives to create accountability and fuel action.
-
Focused Urgency: Cultivating a mindset of focused, efficient action to make tangible progress.
Listen now to learn how to apply these principles to your daily life and leadership, and start making a measurable, exponential impact. Discover the behavioural science-backed methods Adrian Gore has used to build a global health and behaviour powerhouse. Tune in for practical tips and examples of how to override evolutionary biases and unlock your potential for transformative influence.

Platō Coffee: The Origin Story
In December 2019, two brothers from Free State mining towns opened a shipping container in Irene and named their coffee shop after a Greek philosopher. Six years later, Platō Coffee has grown to over 130 stores, a roastery, a bakery, its own training academy, and a London launch on the horizon.
This isn't the version of the story you've read a dozen times. On this episode of the Business Culture Podcast, we take a fresh look at the rise of Platō through the lens of the philosopher they named it after — Plato, and his idea of the ideal Form. Because when you look closely, every strategic decision Stephan and Petrus Bredell have made is really about closing the gap between the ideal cup and the one actually in the customer's hand.
Along the way, we unpack the eight failures before Platō (including the one that killed Stephan's first business a month after his honeymoon), the café hidden inside King Price Insurance that quietly wrote Platō's DNA four years early, the COVID loophole that revealed what the brothers were actually building, and the small-town masterclass that most South African chains never bothered to learn.
Eight lessons for anyone building a business that has to deliver the same promise in more than one place.

The Open Championship looks like tradition — tweed, links golf, unpredictable weather. Underneath it, it's a finely tuned commercial operation. As the tournament returns to Royal Birkdale in 2026, we dig into how the R&A actually runs the numbers: sponsorship deals worth tens of millions, a split broadcasting strategy that plays both premium and free-to-air, ticket demand in the millions, and the hundreds of millions in economic impact a single week can generate for a host town. Expect real figures, a few surprises, and a dry look at why golf's oldest major still pays out the smallest prize purse of the four.

From a childhood treehouse dinner party in Johannesburg to a loan-shark-funded first café and now restaurants across South Africa, the UAE, the UK and Saudi Arabia — this episode traces how Natasha Sideris built Tashas into one of South Africa's most recognisable hospitality brands. We dig into the market gap she spotted, why she deliberately refused to mass-roll-out her franchise, what she learned from selling — and later buying back — a 51% stake to Famous Brands, and how she took the brand global without diluting it. It's a story about scaling culture without losing soul, and why, twenty years and nearly fifty openings in, she says the work never actually gets easier.

In this episode, we explore the grit and philosophy behind the meteoric rise of Freedom of Movement, a brand born not in a boardroom, but in a chaotic South African home where freedom was a reward for discipline. Join us as we follow brothers Roal and Léan Boezaart from their stable corporate careers into a tiny, ten-square-meter "cupboard" office, where they risked everything to turn a childhood ethos into a leather empire. From surviving the "Valley of Death" with a daring pivot into footwear to forging a groundbreaking equity partnership with rugby icon Siya Kolisi, this story proves that authenticity isn't just a marketing strategy—it’s the ultimate currency for building a legacy.

We dive into the strategy that turned a tentative pilot into a multi-billion rand cultural phenomenon, rewiring how an entire nation values their time and convenience.

In the final episode of Season 2, I had the pleasure of spending time with a good friend of mine and General Manager of Pearl Valley Golf Estate at Val de Vie, Damian Wrigley.
I’ve always believed that some of the great leaders in business are able to find the optimal balance between ambition and humility. Damian is somebody who, for me, truly personifies an evolutionary mindset to leadership and culture development. With a solid grounding in both golf operations as well as Food and Beverage, his insights in this interview are worth their weight in gold.

In this episode, I got to chat with Robbie Marshall, Chairman of Golf Data.
A man of humble beginnings, Robbie takes us on a fascinating journey of how Golf Data, South Africa’s most successful course design business became the force it is today as well as befriending Jack Nicklaus and others along the way. We also delve into the partnership between Golf Data and Pearl Valley.
A special thanks to Damian Wrigley, General Manager of Pearl Valley at Val de Vie for setting up this interview.
Background to Robbie Marshall.
ROBBIE MARSHALL – CHAIRMAN (GOLF DATA)
LOVE OF THE GAME

- Robbie Marshall’s love for golf only started after his best friend from his service in the army (Robbie Chapman) introduced him to the game, yet although he had a late start to the game Robbie went on to play 1st League Golf in Johannesburg for 15 years, and during that time Robbie had the fortune to play with the likes of Bobby Locke at Ohenimuri & Gary Player at Crown Mines courses.
- Robbie has also played in the Dubai Desert Classic Pro Am with the US Open Champion Graeme McDowell, and with Ernie Els at the SA Open Pro Am, as well as at the opening of the Ernie Els Design course Oubaai which Golf Data Constructed
PASSION FOR GOLF COURSES
- Robert Douglas Marshall (“Robbie”) has been involved in the business of golf courses for more than 40 years having been the course superintendent at Ohenimuri Country Club & Crown Mines Golf Club from 1970. Robbie, together with his wife Marie then started a close corporation called Lawn Doctor in 1981, and ultimately Golf Data CC was formed in 1989.
Robbie’s early education in turf management started around 1980 when he was selected to attend a turf study course of America, visiting the Texas A&M University. Although already well versed in turf management, this was Robbie’s first formal education in turf studies. A few short years later Robbie was chosen to visit the Toro equipment factory (again in the USA) and there he attended further Turf Study Courses.
Early in 1995 Robbie visited Augusta National for the Masters (which was ultimately won by Ben Crenshaw) to sign an agreement to represent Jack Nicklaus & Nicklaus Design. This was the start of an enduring friendship between Jack & Robbie that continues to this day.
The letter (below) sent to Robbie by Jack after one of his earlier visits to South Africa was one of many that expressed much the same sentiment, namely that Jack held Robbie in high regard for his quality of work, and as a friend.
In the year 2000 Robbie visited England & Scotland with a team of certified USA Golf Course Architects in order to study and debate the architectural design principles of Links versus Parkland courses. Again in 2005 with a similar contingent of professionals in the golf course industry, Robbie played 7 British Open course venues including St Andrews Royal, St Georges Royal, Birkdale Royal, Carnoustie & Muirfield Golf Links, again with a view to understanding the game’s heritage design & design philosophy.
In 2005 Robbie was invited by Jack Nicklaus to attend his final professional round at St Andrews “Old Course” where Jack & Tom Watson stopped during their initial round to greet Robbie & his wife (Marie) on the 11th tee (pictured here);
Robbie & Marie also received personal invites to be the guests of the Jack Nicklaus at the Celebratory dinner marking the end of the professional career of golf’s greatest ever player (Pictured here).
Robbie was named as being one of the 10 most influential people in Golf in South Africa by Compleat Golfer (one of South Africa’s top 2 premier Golf Publications) in 2007 & later that same year he was awarded Compleat Golfer’s most prestigious award, the “Lifetime Contribution to Golf Award” for his “outstanding contribution to Golf in SA”. Robbie’s good friend, the great legend Mr Jack Nicklaus himself recorded a special video tribute to Robbie for the event which was played on announcing Robbie’s award, and he had the following to say about Robbie;
“Robbie Marshall… lifetime achievement award[!]… couldn’t go to a better person my friend! …You are responsible for the Nicklaus organisation and me being involved in South Africa on so many golf courses… Your attention to detail, in making sure the project is completed, in making sure the quality is great, and making sure that what is right for golf the game of golf in SA is being done! …your contribution to golf has been special, and of course the friendship that Barbara and I have had with you [and your family] has been special & we value our friendship and the work we have done together…”
Robbie is not a man to boast about his achievements, and less so about his friendships with exceptional people such as Mr. Nicklaus and Mr. Els to name a few, but beyond all the awards and top ranked courses that Robbie has been instrumental in bringing to life in South Africa, the fact that a great legend, and a man known throughout the world for his perfectionism trusts his brand and reputation in course construction exclusively with Robbie and his company in Southern Africa speaks far more of Robbie’s abilities, knowledge and perfectionism in the ‘game’ of golf course construction and maintenance than any award!
